Our Training Program
Class Schedule & Locations
This is an 8-week online class, with the following exceptions for required in-person instruction:
March 3rd 7-9 PM Lancaster Parks & Rec.
March 10th 7-9 PM Amanda Fieldhouse
March 19th 7-9 PM ALT Park on Field Training
March 24th 7-9 PM Lancaster Parks & Rec.
What You Can Expect
The prospective sports official/umpire will receive comprehensive instruction on:
- Playing rules and mechanics (where to stand, signals, and where to look) for the sport
- Relationship with OHSAA/USA/USSSA and officials
- How to deal with emotionally charged situations
- How to get games and advance your career
- Where to purchase uniforms and equipment
- Where to find local officials/umpires associations
- All information needed to provide each prospective official/umpire with the knowledge and proficiency to be successful at the entry level in sports officiating
What Is Expected of You
To get the most out of this training program, students should:
- Be proficient in reading and writing
- Be ambulatory and have the necessary level of physical fitness required for the sport
- Attend every class session
- Complete weekly quizzes, videos, and class presentations online
- Be prepared to run and engage in strenuous physical activity during field training
- Be proficient in mechanics before first game assignment
⚠️ Important Information Registration Fee: You will be required to pay a Valentine Sports & Instruction instructional fee at registration. Before the start of 4th class you will need to complete the OHSAA registration and pay the online instruction fee that you will complete on your own after the 4th class. At the conclusion of classes and prior to your first game assignment, you will be expected to purchase your own equipment and uniform.
Equipment Requirement: Must have umpire mask before March 10th training. Information about ordering gear will be provided at the first in-person training session.
